Description (The Drew Carey Show, Season 1)

One of television’s brightest comedy sensations, Drew Carey headlines as an average, single everyday Cleveland guy with an underwhelming job and some unfulfilled dreams, struggling to stay financially and romantically afloat in an unpredictable era. This half-hour comedy depicts the life of a wannabe upwardly mobile guy whose looks, well, wouldn’t get him work modeling Speedos, but at least he’s got a brain and a steady supply of perspective and attitude from his lifelong pals, Oswald (Diedrich Bader), Lewis (Ryan Stiles) and Kate (Christa Miller). On the other hand, Drew’s omnipresent office nemesis, the cosmetically challenged Mimi (Kathy Kinney) delights in spreading her own version of hell into both Drew’s private and professional lives. Add to this Drew’s ruthless English boss, Nigel Wick (Craig Ferguson), and his insatiable need to find new and more sadistic methods of firing employees and it’s clear: The Drew Carey Show is a lot like real life. Just a whole lot funnier.

I buy a lot of media. The Drew Carey show rocks. I will abstain from purchasing anything created by your studio until you release the remaining seasons of this show. Charge an arm and a leg. Dub out the music and replace it with appropriate tunes. Get creative. Don't be fools. Release Drew!!!!

Wikipedia has posted that there are legal problems about the music that prevent the release of the remaining seasons of 'The Drew Carey Show". They wrote that "it is unknown at this time if the episodes will ever be released". I'd like to plead with the parties involved to come to some agreement so that fans of this show will no longer be deprived of the funniest show that's ever been on television.

  • How did this pilot succeed?

I was a fan of "The Drew Carey Show" and was thrilled to see that the pilot was available for purchase. For anyone who writes for the screen, big or small, it's important to see pilot episodes to help understand what network execs are looking at when they greenlight a show, not to mention how the creator/s introduced the characters, the theme, the problems, etc. In viewing this episode, I was first struck by how incredibly dated it seemed, even though it's not that old. The second thing was that the first line of the show was given to Lewis (Ryan Stiles), which is: "And that's why the French don't bathe." I will admit, I laughed. It caught me completely off-guard and I had no idea what was happening. But what that did was make Drew a team player, not a star and I didn't really invest him in as much as I might have had he started the show, which I think would have been appropriate. That aside, the pilot to me did not succeed at all. I did not understand what was supposed to be funny about seeing Drew and his two loser friends, who obviously have no life or any place to live, sit and complain about their lives. Christa Miller, who plays "Kate," was obviously brought in to inject some sex appeal and possibly be a love interest for one of the men. But it's painfully obvious that she is smarter than any of them and why she'd hang out with them is impossible to understand. The only character in the show that completely succeeds is Kathy Kinney as "Mimi." From the instant she walked on I was hooked. It was like watching a land mine, knowing that something will set it off, but not knowing when. She had the best lines and she was the most unique, original character. I would have easily sat through 30 minutes of her life because at least she was her own creation. Everyone else seemed completely generic. But maybe that's why the show was successful: Three loser males converging on middle-age, talking about women, their pointless jobs and beer. On paper I cannot see how this would be enough for someone to say "Yeah, green light it." However, Drew Carey had a sort of post-Bill Cullen charm. And eventually I started to root for him and all of them. They did become a bit more real as the series progressed and Drew and Mimi's interactions really created the crux of the show, that and her fixation on Mr. Wick (played by Craig Ferguson, who was not part of the pilot or first year). At any rate, I would have never approved this pilot, although I would have taken Mimi and given her her own show. If you're looking for laughs, this pilot doesn't have them. I'd move forward in the series where the characters are more developed and Craig Ferguson has already joined the show.
